More alternatives – S18 Tom Baker socks!

tumblr_mk8i5tsAzu1rt6jzso1_500In 1980, Tom Baker’s outfit got a major make-over for S18 as part of new producer John Nathan-Turner’s vision for the show. He was outfitted in a burgundy scheme “swashbuckling” costume, complete with a new scarf.

This costume has been confounding cosplayers for a long time, as nearly all of the pieces are not only custom made but very particular in details. But while it’s possible for a tailor to study and replicate his breeches or massive greatcoat, three particular pieces continue to fluster even the elite cosplayers – his scarf, his shoes, and his socks.

s18 socks and shoescropI talk about the S18 scarf in my knitting blog and will speak more about it in the future as I’m currently embroiled in a project to replicate the original yarns, but the other two pieces are perhaps even more difficult to pick up.

The shoes were custom Brogues by famed shoemaker John Lobb in a brown suede. The socks were a custom argyle knit by Corgi. Neither of them have ever been sold in a retail setting.

Luckily, neither of them are SO unique that a little digging can’t uncover a close-enough option, and today I’m here to spotlight one!

Brought to my attention on Gallifrey Base, the website has a HUGE selection of argyle sock styles, in practically every color scheme imaginable. One of those styles is the same black/burgundy scheme as Baker wore with his Lobb brogues.

They are the correct scheme and likely a good color match (though the preview image makes me wonder if the burgundy is a little too light), and they are an “over-the-calf” style (though you’d have to order them to see if they’re truly knee-high, as Baker’s always hid into his breeches). For $18.95 a pair on sale they’re not nearly the most expensive piece you’ll pick up, though it’s a little pricey for off-the-rack socks, but for a possibly screen accurate piece, $19 is a bargain.

You can find the socks at this link. If someone does order the socks, it’d be great to hear what you think of them!
